SUMMER SOLSTICE

Desk with sketchbook open, colored pencils, brushes and palette. Sketchbook is open to a drawing of two budgies in red, blue, orange and pink.

spring shatters in a purple sky
pouring through open windows
sound rattles glass panes
enough to scare a little bird
flying blind in the dark

he settles on a cold front
turns his back to summer
squints his eyes on mine
an attempt to sleep upon
my chilled shoulder

I press my cheek to the screen
suddenly the sky is falling on me
when I realize I’m bleeding
I rhythm along with the rain
and pour pour pour

The summer solstice occurred about a month ago and now we’re in the thick of the season. I want to make sure I post this poem before I forget! Also, please excuse my poor Mandarin Chinese calligraphy in the sketchbook spread… I am slowly attempting to learn the language/dialect. Writing characters helps me as a visual learner.
