the laborers are free
lost and confused
they wander in open space
they dip their toes into reality
and are surprisingly cooled
ants forget the task at hand
to cross toenail bridges
squirrels dig up that creek
to pat it down again
upstream a robin bathes
a rock is carved smooth
at night the space station passes
infinite beings in cold metal quarantine
unaware that they float in Emptiness
I wrote this piece at the beginning of the pandemic after being laid off from my full-time position. I experimented with pressed flowers, sumi ink and salt in my sketchbook. The initial sketch that inspired this piece is displayed below. The two pieces use different papers and react to the ink and salt differently.
